Power and New Line Cinema’s animated War of the Rohirrim. While J.R.R. Tolkien is best known for The

The Plot

Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim recounts the tale of Helm Hammerhand, who became the King of

Rohan in 2741. As the ruler, Helm faced a fierce war with the Dunlendings, mortal men who later sided

with Saruman in The Lord of the Rings. When Dunlending King Freca demanded Helm’s daughter’s hand

in marriage, Helm’s defiant response led to a brutal conflict between their clans.

Retreating to the fortress now known as Helm’s Deep, Helm’s forces endured a siege, with their king’s

relentless spirit ensuring their survival. Despite his valiant efforts, Helm ultimately perished during the

Long Winter. His nephew, King Fréaláf, took the throne and eventually drove back the Dunlending forces.

In the animated film, audiences will witness the epic battle at Helm’s Deep and see Rohan’s capital,

Edoras, under assault by an army that includes the imposing Mûmakil (Oliphaunts). Notably, Lord of the

Rings: War of the Rohirrim is set within Peter Jackson’s film continuity, offering a familiar yet distinct

perspective on the events in Middle-earth.

Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim takes place approximately 250 years before the events of Peter

Jackson’s iconic trilogy. Set around 2758 of the Third Age, the story unfolds as Sauron is recovering within

Dol Guldur but has not yet revealed himself openly. His malevolent influence can still be felt across

Middle-earth during this time.

While some familiar characters like Gandalf, Galadriel, Elrond, Legolas, and Saruman are alive and active

during this era, the film doesn’t necessarily feature them as main characters. Instead, it focuses on the

events surrounding Helm Hammerhand, the King of Rohan, and the war with the Dunlendings. Audiences

will have the opportunity to explore a unique chapter in Middle-earth’s history, witnessing the rise and

heroism of characters connected to Rohan and the struggles they faced against their adversaries.

As the story unfolds, Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim promises to captivate fans with its distinct

narrative, offering a fresh perspective on the rich and expansive mythology of J.R.R. Tolkien’s universe.
