Yates makes Pain Hustlers part-rowdy dramedy, part-half-assed takedown, and entirely an underwhelming film that attempts to make apparent and bland points.

The Plot

“Movie” delves into the cutthroat world of pharmaceuticals, drawing comparisons to “The Big

Short.” The story revolves around Liza Drake, a high school dropout who lands a job at a struggling

pharmaceutical startup in Central Florida. She quickly rises to success, giving the company power and

financial security. However, hidden within this success is a criminal conspiracy that threatens her job and

lives.

The film is inspired by Evan Hughes’ 2018 New York Times Magazine article about Insys, a pharmaceutical

company profiting from the opioid epidemic. Insys paid doctors substantial “speaking fees” to promote

Subsys is a fentanyl-based pain medication. They hired inexperienced salespeople, often young women,

to boost their sales. While some made significant incomes, patients became addicted, and Insys

eventually filed for bankruptcy in 2019.

Is There a Trailer for ‘Pain Hustlers’?

A few days before its international premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, a teaser trailer for

MOVIEs was unveiled on September 6.


On October 10, Netflix unveiled the official trailer.

The first clips were made public along with the release date of January 18, 2023, as part of Netflix’s sizzle

reel showcasing their 2023 film lineup.
