“Twisters” is expected to expand the scale of the tornado outbreak, covering multiple territories. While

introducing new challenges and characters, the film will also include deliberate nods to the original to

appeal to nostalgic fans. Legacy sequels like “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” the “Jurassic World” series, and

Top Gun: Maverick” have shown that they can resonate with both new and nostalgic audiences when

executed well. The hope is that Mark L. Smith’s screenplay for “Twisters” will deliver a fast-paced and

engaging story, capturing the spirit of the original.

Twisters: Everything we know

Jan de Bont, the director of the original “Twister,” has offered a thoughtful perspective on the new sequel,

“Twisters.” He emphasized that the filmmaking style that made the original successful in 1997, with real

elements like objects falling from helicopters and actual ice in a hailstorm scene, is no longer common in

modern studio productions. He believes it’s unlikely for a studio to allow such practical effects today.

When asked if he plans to watch the sequel, de Bont expressed a desire for someone else to see it first.

He remains uncertain about what the new movie will be but is open to the possibility of a fresh approach.

He cited the unexpected success of Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of “Barbie” as a reason for cautious

optimism.

De Bont’s perspective is realistic and open-minded. He recognizes that the practical effects in the original

“Twister” provided an immersive experience, and a complete shift to green screens and CGI might

diminish the sequel’s excitement. While drawing parallels to “Barbie” may be hopeful, he acknowledges

that a new approach could make “Twisters” special and create a worthwhile sequel.
