'Godzilla Minus One': Cast, Release Date, and Everything We Know

Toho’s Godzilla franchise continues alongside Warner Bros. Discovery’s Monsterverse. Their upcoming film, Godzilla Minus One, takes a fresh approach and promises a darker tone. The original 1954 Godzilla film remains iconic, inspiring numerous sequels and crossovers with characters like Mothra, Rodan, and King Kong. While Western adaptations had mixed success, Toho’s own Godzilla films, like 2016’s Shin Godzilla, maintained a serious tone. Godzilla Minus One is the latest installment, with more details to come.

Godzilla Minus One will take place in a completely new universe apart from previous entries, despite

being the 33rd Godzilla movie to be created and published by Toho with the franchise only recently been

reset with Shin Godzilla. The official plot synopsis for the film via Toho reads:

After the war, Japan’s economic state has been reduced to zero. Godzilla appears and plunges the country into a negative state.

It appears that this will be a traditional Godzilla tale, using its eponymous emblem as a real animalistic

beast instead of the kind guardian that has been shown in more recent renditions.

The Director

Takashi Yamazaki will be a fascinating new storyteller for the Godzilla franchise. The remarkably talented

director has demonstrated the ability to revitalise enduring series, as evidenced by the remarkably

overlooked Lupin III: The First. Along with directing the first two Stand by Me Doraemon films, Yamazaki is

developing a third one. Takashi Yamazaki is not only the film’s writer and director, but he

will also oversee the visual effects for the production.

Where can you watch?

Watching a massive spectacle movie like a Godzilla movie on the largest screen available is the finest

experience. When Godzilla Minus One finally opens in theatres this Christmas season, it will be the only

way to watch it. There is currently no information available regarding Toho’s plans for a streaming

platform release. The most recent live-action Godzilla film from Toho, Shin Godzilla, isn’t available for

streaming right now. On Max, though, you can view the new Monsterverse movies as well as a few older

entries from the genre, like the original 1954 movie. With enough enthusiasm, Minus One may

make an appearance at Max.
