The Plot
“3 Body Problem” will adapt Liu Cixin’s first book in the Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy, “The Three
Body Problem.” The series is expected to cover subsequent seasons based on the other two books, “The
Dark Forest” and “Death’s End.”
Netflix’s official logline offers a glimpse into the story: “A young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China
reverberates across space and time to a group of brilliant scientists in the present day. As the laws of
nature unravel before their eyes, five former colleagues reunite to confront the greatest threat in
humanity’s history.”
The series delves into an alien invasion narrative where a top-secret scientific project establishes contact
with an alien civilization in a nearby star system. Faced with their own environmental crisis, the aliens
decide to take over Earth. This triggers the formation of different factions on Earth, with some welcoming
the aliens and others resisting the impending invasion.
While the logline remains cryptic, the series promises a gripping exploration of the consequences of a
pivotal decision in 1960s China that spans across time and space, involving brilliant scientists confronting
an unprecedented threat to humanity.
Who is behind 3 Body Problem?
Game of Thrones co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, known for their work on the epic fantasy
series A Song of Ice and Fire, have returned with a new project: the adaptation of Chinese novelist Liu
Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past series, starting with “3 Body Problem.” Executive producer Alexander
Woo, a key writer for HBO’s True Blood, is also on board.
While some fans might approach this project with caution due to mixed reactions to the final seasons of
Game of Thrones, there’s room for optimism. Unlike Game of Thrones, Cixin’s science-fiction trilogy is
complete, providing a solid material foundation. Benioff and Weiss expressed their excitement for the
adaptation in a Netflix press release, stating, “Liu Cixin’s trilogy is the most ambitious science-fiction series
we’ve read, taking readers on a journey from the 1960s until the end of time, from life on our pale blue
dot to the distant fringes of the universe. We look forward to spending the next few years of our lives
bringing this to life for audiences around the world.”
Teaser and clip for 3 Body Problem
The streamer also unveiled a brand-new episode clip from Netflix that included everyone’s favourite
Maester-in-training, John Bradley, during the streaming service’s Geeked Week in November. In it,
Bradley’s Jack Rooney visits a virtual reality that feels far more real than virtual while investigating some
unknown technology with Jin, played by Jess Hong.
