J. A. Bayona, the award-winning director, is set to make a triumphant return to Spanish-language filmmaking with “Society of the Snow.” The survival drama, based on Pablo Vierci’s nonfiction novel, recounts the harrowing Andes flight disaster of 1972. The film depicts the incredible story of a group of Uruguayan rugby players enduring 72 days of pain, hunger, and harsh mountain weather.
Society of the Snow: Release Date
Society of the Snow premieres in select theatres on December 15 and will be available for streaming on
Netflix on January 4, 2024. The film is set to represent Spain at the 2024 Oscars.

The Plot
“Society of the Snow” is based on Vierci’s novel, chronicling the true events of Uruguayan Air Force
Flight 571. On October 13, 1971, the Montevideo rugby team intended to travel from Uruguay to
Santiago, Chile for a match. Tragically, the plane crashed into the snowy Andes mountains near its
destination. The impact caused 12 immediate fatalities, leaving 29 survivors to endure another day.
Ultimately, after 72 days of search and rescue efforts, only 16 people were rescued.
The Netflix adaptation primarily follows the perspective of Numa Turcatti, a member of Uruguay’s Old
Christians Club rugby team on the ill-fated flight. While “Society of the Snow” portrays the grim reality of
the situation, it also emphasises the profound message of human resilience in the face of death.

Netflix unveiled the first official teaser trailer for Society of the Snow on August 24. Clocking in at little
over a minute, the preview reveals little about the film other than hinting at its terrifying plot.
On October 20, Netflix unveiled the second teaser trailer for Society of the Snow. The brief video contrasts
the joy of Uruguay’s Old Christians Club rugby team as they board Flight 571 with the dread and anxiety
of the approaching collision. Everything becomes silent moments before the plane crashes into the Andes
mountains. The accident leaves a mist of mystery surrounding the horrible aftermath that will follow, as all
indicators of mayhem are muffled into calm silence.
The director
When it was reported in 2021 that Barcelona-born film filmmaker J. A. Bayona would be directing the
adaptation of the novel, details about the film’s early production emerged. recognised for his work on
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Fire, Bayona recently told Netflix how
he originally came across Vierci’s book.
