In the mid-1990s, Hollywood thrived with blockbusters like Titanic and indie hits like Pulp Fiction. In the UK, romantic comedies ruled thanks to Richard Curtis. However, inspired by the success of US crime films, director Guy Ritchie, with Michael Vaughn, blended British wit with gritty crime in Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. Success followed with Snatch and Revolver. Ritchie ventured into other genres but returned to British crime-comedy with The Gentlemen Sequel Series, leading to a Netflix series due to its popularity and franchise potential.

Netflix did disclose that The Gentlemen will debut in March 2024, but no precise release date has been disclosed as of yet. The movie’s premiere was more than four years before to the start of the series. Additionally, the series will debut one month ahead of Guy Ritchie’s upcoming motion picture, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which opens in theaters.

The Gentlemen series boasts a stellar cast, featuring Theo James, Kaya Scodelario, Joely Richardson, Vinnie Jones, Daniel Ings, Giancarlo Esposito, Ray Winstone, Chanel Cresswell, Max Beesley, Harry Goodwins, Pearce Quigley, Jasmine Blackborrow, and Ruby Sear. Additionally, Peter Serafinowicz, Dar Salim, and Michael Vu join in undisclosed roles, promising an intriguing ensemble for the upcoming Netflix show.

When talking about the upcoming series, Ritchie spoke highly of the cast, proclaiming:

I’m thrilled that with Netflix, Miramax and Moonage, we have this opportunity to inhabit it once again. We’re looking forward to bringing fans back into that world, introducing new characters and their stories, and I’m excited to be doing it with this extremely talented cast.

The Gentlemen was once conceived by Guy Ritchie as a television series, but it was eventually turned into a 2020 movie. Ritchie’s life appears to have circled around with the release of the Netflix series.

The official plot synopsis for The Gentlemen reads:

THE GENTLEMEN sees Eddie Horniman (Theo James) unexpectedly inherit his father’s sizeable country estate – only to discover it’s part of a cannabis empire. Moreover, a host of unsavoury characters from Britain’s criminal underworld want a piece of the operation. Determined to extricate his family from their clutches, Eddie tries to play the gangsters at their own game. However, as he gets sucked into the world of criminality, he begins to find a taste for it.

A teaser trailer was released by Netflix on January 15, 2024. Set to the song “Time of the Season” by Zombies, the first look at the series showcases a combination of wealth and criminal activities intertwining, as well as the same brand of violence that Ritchie’s original film showcased.

The Director

Guy Ritchie takes on multiple roles in The Gentlemen series, serving as an executive producer, writer, and director for the first two episodes. Co-written with Matthew Read, who is also an executive producer, the series boasts a strong production team. Executive producers include Marn Davies, Ivan Atkinson, and Marc Helwig from Miramax TV, as well as Will Gould and Frith Tiplader from Moonage Pictures.
