Following its record-breaking 2023 box office success, Super Mario Bros Sequel is moving forward. It’s the second adaptation of Nintendo’s iconic franchise, surpassing the 1993 flop. The 2023 film grossed over $1.36 billion worldwide, making it the second highest-grossing movie of the year. Despite speculation, Jack Black, who played Bowser, hasn’t confirmed any plans for the sequel.
The company declared at the most recent Nintendo Mario Day event that they will be reuniting with Universal and Illumination to create a new Super Mario Bros. film. Shigeru Miyamoto, an executive at Nintendo, and Chris Meledandri, the CEO and founder of Illumination, made the announcement. They said that the film will broaden the scope of the original hit and open in theaters on April 3, 2026 in the United States and select foreign markets. Super Mario Bros. Sequel
The fact that Miyamoto and Meledandri aren’t explicitly calling the upcoming film The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 is fascinating, even if a sequel to the 2023 smash success seems inevitable. The simplest approach to repeat the original film’s success would seem to be to bring back the beloved characters, but the group’s intention to broaden the Nintendo franchise’s universe might work in their advantage. A number of additional characters, such as Yoshi, who was hinted at in a moment after the credits, and Donkey Kong, played by Seth Rogen, were previously established in the first Mario film and will be major themes in the sequel.
While the next Mario movie may not be labeled “Super Mario Bros. Movie 2,” it could still serve as a sequel by introducing new villains like Wart, the Koopalings, Tatanga, or Shadow Mario. With the original cast eager to return, Chris Pratt, Jack Black, and Anya Taylor-Joy are likely to reprise their roles. Additionally, Nintendo may tease its upcoming live-action Legend of Zelda movie, potentially expanding the movie universe beyond the platformer-based adaptation.
