“Ballerina,” initially set for June 7, 2024, faced a delay to ensure top-notch action scenes overseen by Chad Stahelski. Now slated for June 6, 2025, amidst a bustling summer lineup, it promises to stand out alongside heavyweights like “Superman: Legacy,” “The Fantastic Four,” “Mission: Impossible 8,” a new “Jurassic World” installment, and live-action “How to Train Your Dragon.”

Ana de Armas leads the cast of “Ballerina” as Rooney, showcasing her versatility after standout roles in “Blade Runner 2049,” “Knives Out,” and “No Time To Die.” Catalina Sandino Moreno and Norman Reedus join in undisclosed roles, adding to the intrigue. Gabriel Byrne takes on the antagonist role, though plot details remain secret.

Excitingly, familiar faces return to the John Wick universe: Keanu Reeves as the titular character, Ian McShane as Winston, and Anjelica Huston as The Director. Sadly, “Ballerina” marks the final appearance of Lance Reddick as Charon, following his passing in 2023.

The official plot summary released thus for Ballerina doesn’t give too much to go off of, stating it follows “A young female assassin seeks revenge against the people who killed her family”. Thankfully, while promoting John Wick: Chapter 4 at CCXP 2022, Keanu Reeves shed a bit more light on the new project:

"[she is a] woman who has some very difficult circumstances and who's looking for revenge. Whoever killed her- someone killed her father. Who could that be? And so it's her journey for actually understanding her past. She lost her father at a young age, and she doesn't really know what happened. Only that someone came into the house and killed her father, who had a tattoo. And as we know in John Wick, if you have a tattoo, something's going on."

Ballerina will also explore more about John Wick’s origin story, saying in an interview:

“The original script was set [in the] Swiss Alps, which is territory that the John Wick movies have not touched. So, I think in a great way, it meant that we could kind of stick to the original story of that script from Ballerina without stepping on the toes of John Wick. But also it’s a character who we know went to the same ballet academy as John. I think in Ballerina you’ll get to see some of the hints of what John experienced during his origins in that place, but through the eyes of a different character. It still solves some of the answers of Wick, just through the eyes of a new character.”

Ballerina: Director

Len Wiseman, known for the “Underworld” series, takes the directorial reins for “Ballerina” as Chad Stahelski focuses on “John Wick” chapters 4 and 5, among other projects. Screenwriter Shay Hatten, behind “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum,” originally penned “Ballerina” as a standalone before it morphed into a part of the franchise, a process akin to “Die Hard with a Vengeance” and “10 Cloverfield Lane.” Emerald Fennell, an Academy Award winner for “Promising Young Woman,” collaborated with Hatten on the revised script.
